Blast Shards are used to create Battery Cores, which provide more energy for Cole. You begin the game with 12 Battery Cores, but by collecting Blast Shards, you can increase that number to 24.
There are two general strategies for collecting blast shards, depending on your goals. If you're trying to increase your number of battery cores, simply keep your eyes open as you play through the game. You'll find shards all over the city. Anytime you're outside of combat, press L3 to display nearby shards on your mini-map. Pick them up whenever you find them and over the course of the game you'll max out your battery cores. On the maps below you'll see each shard locations . This will take a long time, but it's the only way to make sure you have all the shards. Searching in this manner is easier if you've completed the side missions for that area, because you won't have to fight enemies as you search.
There are 350 blast shards you can find in the city. There are also some missions that give out blast shards. These mission blast shards are not included in the 350 number, nor do they count for the Junior Geologist/Mineral Club/Rockhound trophies.
